Good asked:

So, I’m a 25 year old individual, I’m about to graduate soon and I live in MI. I’m just learning about health insurance and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what you think would be the best type of insurance for my situation. I plan on staying here in the UP for a while bar-tending and not utilizing my degree just yet. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate it, thanks….This is all new and confusing to me.

If you’re healthy and your employment does not offer insurance, I recommend finding an individual policy with a high deductible that you can use along with an HSA. An HSA will provide tax savings for you, even if you deposit dollars after-tax. Be sure to review several choices of plans before choosing one-look at your medical expenses in the last few years, keeping in mind that a high-deduct plan means that you’re paying your expenses.

The benefit of an HSA is that you keep the account forever, so you can deposit an amount every pay period, take a tax deduction every year (unless you can deposit through a direct pay deduction), and if you need the funds, they are there for you. At 25, you could save a nice chunk of money.

You won’t ever lose that money, even if you get a new job that offers health insurance that isn’t a high deductible plan, you just won’t be able to contribute while covered under that plan.

Health Insurance for people like you is actually relatively easy to find. There are lots of people in your situation who just got out of school and need new coverage. There are basic plans that cover basic doctor’s visits and prescriptions, and not as expensive surgeries.
Obama is planning on passing new legislation that would offer more health care, so you it may come easier and sooner than you think!
